Ahmedabad-based Red Events managed the magnificent wedding celebrations for two business magnate families in Thailand. Bangkok based billionnaire Anil Kothari hosted his daughter Ankita’s marriage to Sitesh Hirawat. And Mumbai-based Divya Dhadda married Abhinav Daga in Phuket.

The events at the Kothari wedding in Bangkok included a music melange with Rodney, a mehfil-e-mehtaab, a pre-wedding party with performances by Vishal & Shekhar and a ghazal evening by Roopkumar and Sonali Rathod. For the Dhadda-Daga destination wedding, a team of 200+ event managers and executives, 100 + artists, several florists, chefs, skilled Bengali artisans, sound and light engineers and technicians travelled from India. Since the wedding was in the monsoon season, and the family wanted a wedding by the beach, Red Events set-up transparent centrally air-conditioned water-proof marquees, which cost a bomb, almost as much as the decor.

The entertainment@ Divya and Abhinav’s wedding included a Grand Illusion show by Joe Conrad, a performance by talented singer Krishna Beura whose hits include ‘Soniyo’, ‘Main Jahan Rahoon’, ‘Deedar De’ and ‘Aap Ki Kashish’. Sonu Nigam performed at the Sangeet. On the day of the Wedding, Abhinav arrived on a Thai elephant and accompanying him in the grand parade were the high spirited baraatis, a host of Thai dancers and musicians, and Bhangara performers.

Mystical Moments- Ayesha & Nizar’s Wedding in Bangkok

Nizar Wattad and Ayesha Hashmi’s wedding festivities in Bangkok were a 3 day fun-filled affair. Nizar is a well-known Palestinian rapper, hip hop producer and screenwriter based in the US. Ayesha is a Hindu-Muslim, who grew up in Bangkok and later moved to work in the US. The celebration with over 200 family members, relatives and friends was held at a tranquil haven in the vivacious city- Plaza Athenee in Bangkok.

Ayesha and Nizar are very charming and have loads of charisma. So naturally, the sangeet ceremony of the uber creative couple was a special affair. The talented groom added his personal touch to the sangeet celebrations, with fusion-rap performances- he and his friends renowned rappers Yassin Alsalman (popularly known as the The Narcicyst) and Omar Offendum performed three rap songs, to receive a thunderous applause from all the guests.

The wedding was planned to perfection by Viji and Khalid Hashim (Ayesha’s parents) and managed by Bangkok-based Keeran Baweja who runs ‘Weddings by Keeran’. The celebrations included a Welcome Dinner on a River Cruise, and a Grand Reception with performances by Bangkok’s must-see attractions like the Puppet Show and Thousand Hands.

Gaganjot and Manak got married in Bangkok. Their wedding celebrations commenced with a kitsch theme Mehendi at Sofitel Sukhumvit. The decor for this function was inspired by pop-art- riot of colors and kitsch artwork.

The ‘Glam Du Jour’ theme sangeet & ring ceremony was held the next day at the big ballroom of Hotel Plaza Athenee. Inspired by Moulin Rouge, the decor featured rich colors, deep shades of maroon, purple and gold. Shobana, the popular singer from Dubai sang melodious songs and the bride was dressed in a beautiful Sabyasachi lengha.

The Wedding ceremony at the Gurudwara was a simple and traditional affair.

With the political unrest in Thailand, is it safe to plan a destination wedding there? Wedding Planners share their opinion.

Armed soldiers with automatic weapons in the streets, nationwide curfews installed and news broadcasts censored; these are some of the updates we are reading in the papers, so naturally everyone is wondering if Thailand, or more specifically Bangkok will be affected when it comes to tourists’ traffic. While tourism is the mainstay of Thailand, WeddingSutra readers will know that Thailand is synonymous with Destination Weddings too. In the last few weeks, we’ve heard some discussions around weddings there and if and how they are likely to be affected; while travel experts state it will be business as usual, we spoke to five Wedding Planners to know their perspective.

   Rimjhim Bhagchandani- Rimjhim Events, Dubai
RimjhimMy company started planning weddings in Thailand with my own daughter’s wedding in Hua Hin in 2010 after which I have managed ten weddings all over Thailand. It is a preferred venue for destination weddings as the locations are stunning and the hospitality is unmatched. Many of my potential clients are expressing concern about Thailand, and I can understand their perspective, after all safety of their family and friends are paramount. That being said, I have been visiting Thailand for the last 20 years, and my experience has always been positive. I was stranded during the 2008 turmoil in Bangkok and within two days I was put on a flight back home. After all, the Thai Government works hard to ensure tourists’ safety. I am currently busy planning two weddings taking place in Thailand later this year, I really believe marriage is an extremely auspicious time in one’s life and the heavens watch over you. Of course, be prudent in your choice of venue and avoid any areas of unrest. Luckily, there are many stunning locations in Thailand which are not affected by the disturbances.

   Varun Khanna- Advaita Events, Delhi
varunOur company is a complete wedding management company specialising in Thailand, and the last weddings we managed were at Shangri-La- Chiang Mai, Angsana Laguna Phuket and Siam Kempinski- Bangkok. The next wedding is in Khao Lak in August 2014. Our simple advice to clients is to stay off the areas close to the government offices in Bangkok city, and we reassure them that there is no need to worry. We have seen similar situations in the past; but the country’s citizens are calm and considerate towards others especially foreign visitors. So if you’re planning a celebration there, remember everything is normal and make the most of the situational discounts and schemes which various resorts are offering.

Keeran Baweja- Weddings by Keeran, Bangkok
Keeran BawejaI am based in Bangkok and my company ‘Weddings By Keeran’ has been organizing weddings since over ten years in locations like Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi, Koh Samui, Hua Hin, Bangkok and Chiang Mai.The current situation in Thailand may sound scary to those who are overseas, but all this is temporary. Here, life as well as work is progressing smoothly. We are managing two weddings in June both are at Shangri-La, Bangkok and the next two are in July, in Krabi. My advice to those who are getting married here in 2014, go ahead with everything as planned and I am sure your guests will go back with pleasant memories as always. If you need any further information or clarifications keep in touch with the offices of Tourism Authority of Thailand in Delhi and Mumbai.

Candice Pereira- Marry Me- The Wedding Planners, Mumbai
IMG_3115Having planned weddings at multiple destinations across the world, we still get the most requests for weddings in Thailand. The Thai hospitality, beautiful beaches, great hotel options, understanding of Indian weddings etc. are some of the many reasons why Thailand is the most popular location for destination weddings and will continue to be so. We have just returned from a trip to Phuket and Bangkok with our clients who are planning a wedding in December 2014. Having been there at this time, I can definitely say that streets are peaceful and everyone is carrying on with their lives normally. I am sure there will be less ambiguity in the near future and I think there should be no reason for anyone to reconsider venue options.

   Ekta Sharma- Krafted Knots, Kolkata
Ekta Sharma2Every client wants a smoothly coordinated and well managed affair to remember.  So my advice for those who are getting married there, follow the Thai media and if required connect with the Tourism Authority of Thailand Offices in Mumbai and Delhi to clarify your doubts. If you can, plan all the events inside the hotel or resort itself, because most of them have fabulous indoor and outdoor venues, and choose locations like Koh Samui, Krabi that will be minimally affected due to the political unrest.

Darshana and Pankaj’s trendy post-wedding shoot in Thailand

The cityscapes of Bangkok in Thailand were lit with action from Pankaj and Darshana’s post-wedding shoot. Pankaj shares how he tricked his bride into packing clothes for the stunning shoot, and why the time and effort he took to plan everything was worth it.

Darshana and Pankaj's trendy post-wedding shoot in Thailand

It all began when Darshana’s mother showed interest in Pankaj as a future son-in-law on a matrimonial website. Pankaj shares, “I wasn’t a regular on the portal so by the time I saw the update from Darshana, she had already deleted her account. I really wanted to connect with her so I dropped her a message on Facebook followed by a ‘friend request’.” The ‘friend request’ led to message exchanges, birthday wishes and consequently, a date “When we finally decided to meet, our ‘casual’ coffee break turned into a date that went on for over four hours.” After a series of meetings where Cupid successfully played his role, the couple decided to get married.

The #DarPan wedding had it all – from traditional Sindhi rituals to exotic carnival dancers. However, the most important elements were the surprises that that Pankaj had planned. “Our wedding caricature invitation cards, the artist performances at our wedding, our honeymoon, and in fact, even our post-wedding photoshoot were all surprises for Darshana. Yes, these things do take a lot of effort to plan, but her priceless reactions every time made all the hard work worth it.”

For their post-wedding shoot, Pankaj whisked his new bride to Thailand’s capital, Bangkok. After all, when you are looking to capture happy frames, what would be a better place than the land of smiles!
As an event planner who had orchestrated several weddings in the city, Pankaj was well versed with the locales and knew exactly where he wanted the pictures to be shot.

“I chose three iconic locations in Bangkok which included the party district of Khaosan Road, the famous Sathorn Bridge that is flanked by towering buildings on both sides, and the beautiful Wat Benchamabophit Temple. In the recent years, street art culture in Bangkok has come to the forefront to become an integral part of the city’s walls and urban scenery. We shot a series of pictures against a wall of street art where we replaced our fairytale looks with modern ones,” recalls Pankaj.

Being in the events industry, Pankaj was familiar with several Bangkok-based photographers, which came handy when zeroing down on one for their shoot. “I knew a lot of photographers there, but I chose Nant because I really like his sense of photography and imagination. He is not just a good photographer but is also an artistic editor, which makes his photographs really stand out. To top it off, he can speak fluent English unlike a lot of photographers in Thailand,” shares Pankaj.

Pankaj’s attention to detail included hair and makeup even for himself, as guys typically don’t pay attention to these details. “Our hair and makeup for the shoot was taken care of by Mrs. Dilraj Arrora, who is one of the leading Indian makeup artists based in Bangkok.”

While all the backend work went smoothly without Darshana getting even the slightest hint of what Pankaj was planning for her, the challenge came when Pankaj had to get her to pack the right clothes. “At first I felt like stealing her all her clothes and keeping it in my bag! After some thinking I came up with a trick. We, along with our families, were going to go to Goa after our reception as part of the post-wedding celebrations. A few hours before we left, I told Darshana that it would be a good idea to pack some pretty clothes just in case we found a good photographer there who could click some photos of us. She agreed, and I got all I needed for our post-wedding shoot,” explains the enterprising groom.

That, however, wasn’t the only obstacle Pankaj was anticipating. Usually, Bangkok experiences monsoon in the month of July, and the skies there are usually overcast for days without a hint of the sun. Nevertheless, when the couple spent an entire day shooting without having to face any showers, it felt like the stars had aligned only for the duo. “Our shoot took 14 hours, and we changed our looks several times. Since there was no time to go back to the hotel for every change, Nant carried a portable tent for us. So we were practically changing our clothes on the roads! Everything would have been jeopardized if it would have started raining. However, the rain gods were kind and held their patience until we finished our shoot. The minute Nant took the last shot, it started pouring and we all got drenched from head to toe. It was definitely the most memorable day of our lives! A lot of work went behind this one day, but the results were fantastic. Of course, the credit goes to Nant who captured the chemistry between Darshana and me so well, and Dilraj who made us look like movie stars!”

Advice for Couples
“If you are planning to do photoshoot in Bangkok it’s important to choose a photographer who speaks English. A language barrier can cause a lot of issues. Also, choose your locations well in advance as you may need to take permissions to shoot at some places which can be time consuming as well as costly.”
